Community Housing Ltd's success as an organisation is largely due to community engagement approaches that build on community strengths, sharing expertise and creating partnerships to develop innovative project plans that improve access to sustainable housing with a broad range of community partners.
This project showcases Community Housing Ltd’s community engagement approach in working with indigenous communities.
The housing was built on land owned by the Gippsland East Gippsland Aboriginal Cooperative (GEGAC) and was redeveloped by CHL in consultation with GEGAC and with funds supplied by the Department of Family, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA).
The four bedroom house faces west towards the street with a side carport and connecting deep front verandah to shelter the front door and windows from the western sun. Additional shading was provided to the west facing bedroom window. The long north wall of the house includes sun-catching windows to the living areas and the large lounge room to the rear overlooks the private garden and access to a generous undercover outdoor living area. Also included in the unit is wheelchair access, with wider doorways and stepless shower; and an energy-efficient design achieving 5.5 stars.
Construction commenced April 2007 and the tenants moved in September 2007.
Tenants are very satisfied with their home. Community Housing Ltd and GEGAC continue to work together to explore new options for improving living conditions for indigenous people.
