Significance

Currently, two-thirds of indigenous households live in rented accommodation compared to one third of other households. 5 per cent of indigenous households live in overcrowded conditions compared with less than 1 per cent of other Australians.

Community Housing Ltd’s partnership with the Lake Tyers Aboriginal Community has produced ground breaking outcomes after only 15 months. Lake Tyers is a discrete aboriginal community located some 350km east of Melbourne.

Size

Design and construction of 5 new homes
Upgrade all homes
Refurbishment of the sports pavilion

Timing

All work was completed within scheduled timelines with the first beginning in 2004.

Recognition

Rent collection has increased to 85% allowing cyclic maintenance to occur.

Most importantly, employment and training initiatives have provided members of the community with construction and housing maintenance employment.

Community Housing Ltd have made a long term commitment to the LTAT through employment of an on site housing manager and construction supervisor, construction supervisor, ensuring continuation of the housing strategy and long term sustainability of the trust.
