Community Housing Ltd provides small grants through its innovative Housing Establishment Fund. These are typically individuals and families in housing crisis with a short term cashflow problem. Funds are used to pay for rent-in-advance, assistance with rent in arrears, removal expenses, or overnight accommodation. The average grant amount is around $460.
When receiving money from the Housing Establishment Fund, beneficiaries are made aware that these funds need to be a sustainable community resource, used to assist many others in similar circumstances to themselves both now and in the future. Entirely optional and assisted by affordable repayment terms, 25% of beneficiaries in 2007-08 repaid their grant knowing that they’re contributing to maintaining a fund that directly benefits others in the community.
