With its recent approval as the fifth affordable housing growth provider for Western Australia, Community Housing Limited (CHL) is moving quickly to establish itself in the state, with the announcement of Shane Hamilton as West Australian State Manager and the establishment of CHL’s headquarters in Perth.
“Western Australia holds tremendous potential for growth in affordable housing. There’s support at every level of government to build stock levels for households on low to medium incomes throughout the state,” says CHL’s Managing Director, Steve Bevington. “Shane has a reputation for having productive working relationships with numerous stakeholders and being able to deliver outcomes. We’re very pleased to have him on the CHL team.”
Mr. Hamilton brings strong public sector experience in housing to the role. His ability to work across government and the private sector using well-established networks, and his experience in working with indigenous organisations and communities are seen as strong assets in helping CHL deliver sustainable and affordable housing outcomes in WA.
Before joining CHL, Mr. Hamilton has worked with the Department of Housing since 2006 where he started as Executive Director of Aboriginal Housing and Remote Communities. He was then promoted to Deputy Director General of Housing and Works, a role which incorporated his previous portfolio and affordable housing, as well as numerous other divisions in the department.
In 2008, Mr.Hamilton was given the opportunity to head up the team managing the roll-out of the State and Federal Government stimulus packages for housing, a role that has continued until his move to CHL. In the meantime, with the movement of Works to the Department of Treasury and Finance earlier this year, Mr. Hamilton was made General Manager of Service Delivery within the new housing department structure.
During his time in managing the economic stimulus programs, Mr. Hamilton had the opportunity to work with organisations involved in development and construction of works, as well as the affordable housing providers, who are slated to manage 75% of these newly constructed homes. In understanding CHL’s innovative approach to the delivery of housing, Mr. Hamilton was excited by what he saw and took up the offer to be a part of CHL’s future in WA.
“I aim to develop CHL as WA’s leading community housing provider, delivering sustainable and affordable housing across the state. In order to achieve this vision, we’ll be working closely with all levels of government and the private sector,” says Mr. Hamilton.
